You may actually be snacking right now and wondering if going to bed in 15 minutes will be bad for you. Well, first of all, if you are online right now and it’s getting late we both know you most likely aren’t going to be going to sleep anytime soon. You’ll accidentally fall down an internet rabbit hole and look at the clock and see that it is 2 am. Well, I know I would be doing that if it was ten o’clock right now. Anyway, I digress. Is all that snacking bad to do before bed?
Does Eating Before Bed Actually Cause Weight Gain?
From a few studies, it isn’t necessarily the eating before bed that causes weight gain. It is, instead, the poor eating habits that eating before bed encourages. When you are asleep your metabolism averages the same as if you were awake. This means that the food that you are eating will most likely be digested at roughly the same rate as if you were awake.
Many people also think that the calories that you intake before sleeping count more. This is also not really true. As described earlier, your metabolic rate is basically the same as when you are awake so it will not really make your calories count more. With this being said, the food you have before bed is most likely some high-calorie food which is not really good for you to begin with.
So You’re Saying That it is Perfectly Fine to Eat Before Bed?
Well, not exactly. It’s probably better to eat before bed than not having dinner. Don’t try to feast before bed though. It can end up making you feel full and being uncomfortable while trying to sleep. It can also promote poor eating habits. Overeating anytime is not really a good thing, but if you are snacking before bed after eating dinner it can promote poor eating habits. This is because you are having more calories after eating a full meal. These calories may not be necessary and encourages your body that you need more calories.
So What Should I Eat Before Bed?
If you need to eat before bed, try to stay away from fatty foods. Also, try not to drink any alcohol before bed. Alcohol acts as a muscle relaxant and can cause snoring. It also messes with your sleep cycle and prevents deep sleep. Fatty foods can also cause you to end up tossing and turning during the night.
Things that you should eat before bed include mainly grains and fruits. These foods can actually help promote good sleep by helping triggering melatonin and serotonin in the brain. Studies have suggested that eating certain fruits, such as kiwi, can help you fall asleep faster and improve overall sleep quality.
All in all, is it bad to eat before bed? It really depends on what you eat, what your body is like, and many other things. The best thing to keep in mind before you start snacking before bed is what you eat and what time you are planning to sleep. The sooner you are going to sleep the worse it will be for you to fall asleep.
